I recently began playing the fighting game called Soul Caliber III. It is a good fighting game, but is not as good as the other two in the series. The fighting is still clean and fluid, but the combos have been made much shorter. This could be good or bad depending how you look at it, but it does make for some flashy fighting. The multiplayer is still very fun and enjoyable, which makes up for the lacking single player. The “Tales of Souls” mode is fun because you see all the different stories for all the different characters. Also, after almost each battle there is a choice you can make for your character which dictates how the story goes, so you can make it different each time. All of the other modes seem a little lacking though, and none of them are as fun or original as the first two games. “Chronicles of the Sword” is a real time strategy, which is a little odd and not much fun.
One of the best features of the game is the character creation mode, which allows you to make a totally unique fighter. You can create some very interesting characters, and as you play, you unlock more and more things to add to your character. The game already comes with 30 characters, with many returning faces and a couple of new ones, which are fun and fit in the Soul Caliber story quite nicely. The game also has many other things that can be unlocked, and GameFAQs has a great list of them. So while the game’s single player modes are a little lacking, the fast-paced fighting and character creation makes up for any faults. I hope that Namco decides to continue improving on the series.
