Mommy Mall Gold Star Award Winner
The Senior Dogs Project
Teri Goodman, founder of The Senior Dogs Project, has been selected as a recipient of our Gold Star Award for her achievements in creating a wonderful site for the care and adoption of senior dogs - The Senior Dogs Project.
The Senior Dogs Project is dedicated to changing the perception and
treatment of older dogs in our society. Aging is considered a defect in
our culture, whether in a person or a dog. That's why most people think
of getting a puppy when they want a dog; it's how puppy mills and
backyard breeders can continue to run their inhumane and careless
operations; it's why dogs get dumped at animal shelters by owners who
think they've grown too old and troublesome; and it's the reason most
older dogs who wind up at shelters are euthanized without ever being put
up for adoption. The fact is that older dogs have a lot to offer and
are a far more appropriate choice than a puppy in many situations.
Teri Goodman conceived of the Senior Dogs Project and is the Project
Coordinator and webmaster for the srdogs site. The former owner of
Dandy Doggie, a San Francisco-based gourmet dog biscuit company, she
began the project shortly after selling her business in 1996, inspired
primarily by a Golden Retriever named "Misty," whom she and her husband
"inherited" from a cousin at the age of 10. Teri has two published
books {The Dancer's Companion (Doubleday, publishers), written during
her career as a dancer; and Purr-fect Dishes (William Morrow,
publishers), a book of recipes to prepare for cats}. She writes, edits,
formats, and posts all the material for the website. Her husband, Andy,
is the resident computer guru and provides both technical and other
critical support (such as financial).
Charlene T. Jose, who is passionate about dogs in general and older dogs in particular, contributes her photography skills.
Kelly Bryson, a highly-organized and efficient person, acts as general assistant, helping with dogs and other essentials.
And, of course, there are the dogs, both present and gone, who inspire our work and dedication: Misty, Ty, Jazzie, George, Bados, Trevor, Simba, Gypsy, Ruffles, Emma, Kirby, Coco, Ven, etc.,
etc., etc.
The project is also indebted to the Senior-L E-mail list -- both to the
owners of the list (Sally Drake, Suzanne Kane, and Ellen Byerly) for
organizing and maintaining it; and to the list subscribers, who so
generously share their wit and wisdom on all subjects pertaining to
loving, rescuing, protecting, and caring for older dogs.
The Mommy Mall feels that Teri Goodman and the entire staff at The Senior Dog Project, are most deserving of the Gold Star Award because of the time, attention, and care they provide for all of the canine senior citizens out there. Congratulations, and keep up the great work, Senior Dog Project!
