Sweetest Day

Sweetest Day is celebrated each year, on the third Saturday of October. In 2007, Sweetest Day falls on Saturday, October 20. Many parts of the world have never heard of Sweetest Day, but here in Northeastern Ohio, Sweetest Day is nearly as common as Valentine's Day. Growing up, I thought Sweetest Day was just a day for men to show appreciation to the women in their lives. One of those days where if your man remembers, everything is wonderful, but if he forgets, heaven help him!

Apparently, Sweetest Day started in Cleveland, Ohio as a day to bring happiness to orphans and homeless people. Today, Sweetest Day is more commonly a day to show appreciation to our loved ones. With all the sadness and heartache this year, I think we could use a day to spread happiness. Think of all the people that have lost their homes and family members due to the hurricane, or lost loved ones due to the war. Perhaps you may choose to volunteer at a local shelter, check in on an elderly neighbor, or just tell your mom that you love her. We should do these things everyday, but it doesn't hurt to have a special day to think of others.
